The guard reflects the importance of the activity inside Paradiso to the outside. The building has many shapes; it is a monument, a church and a temple of rock. Mainly, it is a building of status, an icon. The Changing of the Guard is a bombastic spectacle that challenges the public to estimate the cultural value of a place like Paradiso. The guards protect the spirit of pop culture. They parade at will, and three times a day (rush hour) swap regiments. The official change incorporates lyrics from David Bowie, The Police, and Gene Kelly. Their uniforms refer to military tradition in and out of pop-culture. They incorporate architectural details from inside Paradiso, like the collar detail which is a replica of the lobby floor.
